The scientific expedition to the region of eastern Svalbard has come to an end, which took place within the framework of the implementation of the project Harsval – Bilateral initiative aiming at Harmonization of the Svalbard cooperation (tasks 1.2.1. “Coastal zone changes and geohazards” and 1.2.2. “Paleogeographic and thermal evolution”).
The objectives for the international team included interdisciplinary studies of Triassic rocks and Cretaceous magmatic intrusions of the HALIP (High Arctic Large Igneous Province ) and interdisciplinary geomorphological, biological-ecological and oceanological studies of contemporary changes in the environment and landscape of the coasts under conditions of global warming (recession of glaciers and changes in sea ice). At selected locations, digital terrain models were made using drones. After carrying out research work at numerous locations on the east coast of Spitsbergen, Edgeøya, Barentsøya and western Nordaustlandet, the expedition returned to Longyearbyen, thus concluding the sailing loop around Spitsbergen at the same time. The expedition leader was PhD, Assoc. Prof. Krzysztof Michalski.
