Two-day workshops on “FAIR Data Principles and Data Formats” were held on 20-21 June 2024 at the CENAGIS Center (www.cenagis.edu.pl) of Warsaw University of Technology in Józefosław (near Warsaw). The workshop was organized as part of the HarSval project work package WP3. Representatives from the HarSval project consortium and the Polish Polar Consortium (www.pkpolar.pl) participated in the workshop. The workshops were conducted by renowned Polish and Norwegian experts specializing in FAIR data principles and data standards from institutions in both countries:
- Luke Harry Marsden – Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET.NO)
- Natalia Galica – National Science Centre (NCN)
- Gabriela Czarny – National Science Centre (NCN)
- Paweł Kowalski – Warsaw University of Technology (WUT)
- Andrzej Głażewski – Warsaw University of Technology (WUT)
The first day focused on introducing participants to FAIR data management principles and their practical implementation. Led by a representative from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET.NO), the session highlighted the role of data in societal services and demonstrated data integration using the SIOS example. Additionally, representatives from the National Science Centre (NCN) addressed key issues related to FAIR Data, including definitions, importance, national and international legislative considerations, and fundamental data management principles such as licenses and persistent identifiers.
The second day centered on the practical application of CF-NetCDF data formats and geospatial metadata standards, led by MET.NO and Warsaw University of Technology. This allowed participants to acquire specific skills in working with advanced data formats and integrating them effectively. Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in discussions and practical exercises that deepened their understanding of scientific data management and sharing processes.
