“From October 21 to 25, 2024, I participated in the course Cyber2A – Machine Learning in Arctic Research, organized by the Arctic Data Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The course aimed to provide Arctic researchers with essential tools and knowledge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the challenges and opportunities of this dynamic region. The workshops emphasized the importance of data-driven science in Arctic research and offered a comprehensive introduction to AI and machine learning tailored to the needs of scientists working in this field.
The course program consisted of two main parts:
1. Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence – covering key concepts and methodologies.
2. Applications of AI in Arctic Research – focusing on data analysis, building and testing predictive models, and identifying complex Arctic phenomena using AI algorithms.
During the short presentation session, I presented my research on applying machine learning methods in glacier radar studies, titled “Changes in the thermal structure of glacier based on repeated radio-echo sounding”. Discussions with experts provided new perspectives that will be helpful for further research in this area. Thanks to the support of the HarSval program, participating in the Cyber2A course allowed me to better understand the potential of Artificial Intelligence in Arctic research. The skills acquired during the workshops are directly applicable to my work with radar data, satellite imagery analysis, and environmental studies.”
