The Harsval project includes also strengthening the mobility of scientists between Polish and Norwegian entities. The outcome will be the integration of the Polish and Norwegian scientific communities, increased cohesion through increased competence and skills, and the creation of new international scientific initiatives based on Polish-Norwegian consortia to solve complex research challenges.
More information about the mobility programme you can found in WP2.
We received a report about the internship to Norwegian Meteorological Institute in Oslo from MSc Meri Korhonen (Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences).
We invite you to enjoy:
“The main aim of the research visit was to establish dataflow for meteorological observations from Hornsund. The first step was to focus on the data recorded by the Vaisala weather station and to convert stored data into netCDF format for publication. More specifically, this included learning about the global and variable attributes, metadata and naming conventions. These goals were successfully reached with the guidance of Dr. Luke Marsden, who is the data manager at Met.no and SIOS. As a result, Python-scripts for converting several types of data into netCDF together with scripts to update the existing netCDFs by appending new data were written during the visit. In addition, separate files for defining metadata attributes were created.
Another goal of the visit was to get familiar with MeteoIO tool used for quality controlling meteorological data. Unfortunately, the installation of MeteoIO with additional required software proved complicated on a Windows computer and thus it was decided to use other means to quality control the data.
Overall, the visit gave me an efficient start in processing the meteorological data by introducing best practices for data management and providing examples of Python-scripts for data processing. I believe that I would have spent more time finding the tools, vocabularies and instructions without the possibility to discuss with people already familiar with the topic.
In case of further questions, I now know who I can turn to. In the near future, I will be in contact with Dr. Luke Marsden and Dr. Øystein Godøy when the data is ready for publication on SIOS dataportal.”
